The Punjab government has completed the feasibility study for the ambitious Islamabad–Murree monorail project, marking a key milestone in one of the province’s most anticipated transport initiatives. The 40-kilometer line, envisioned to connect Islamabad to Murree, is designed to feature a significant elevated section to overcome the region’s challenging terrain.
Initially, the first phase was planned to run from Lake View Park to Pindi Point in Murree, but new proposals now include extending the route to the Islamabad International Airport to make travel more convenient for tourists and residents.
Officials confirmed that the feasibility process has been finalized and preparations are underway to begin the procurement and track development phase.
Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif has been closely monitoring the project and has directed relevant departments to accelerate the implementation timeline. Once construction begins, the monorail system is expected to be completed within two years.
The route is likely to follow the old Murree Road, with transport experts confirming that the terrain is suitable for the construction of a modern monorail system. The project aims to enhance tourism, reduce travel time, and promote sustainable mobility between the twin cities and Murree.
A recent meeting between the Punjab government and the Capital Development Authority (CDA) discussed potential alignment options for connecting the monorail to the Islamabad International Airport.
Officials reviewed several possibilities, including using the Srinagar Highway right of way from the airport to Peshawar Mor, followed by an extension to Lake View Park.
The CDA also proposed potential linkages with Margalla and Rawat railway stations, which could allow future integration with Pakistan’s broader rail infrastructure. Both parties have agreed to conduct a pre-feasibility study for the airport-to-Lake View Park section before finalizing the alignment plan.
Once operational, the Islamabad–Murree monorail project is expected to become a game changer for regional tourism and transportation. The route will offer a scenic, fast, and eco-friendly alternative to road travel, reducing congestion and improving accessibility for visitors heading to Murree’s popular hill resorts.
The initiative reflects the Punjab government’s broader commitment to modern, sustainable, and efficient transportation systems that support economic growth and urban connectivity.
