The Islamabad-Murree Expressway upgradation project has come under scrutiny after Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan expressed dissatisfaction over delays in its completion. The minister directed the National Highway Authority (NHA) to expedite development works, warning that no further extensions would be granted.

Focus on Beautification and Green Belts

During his inspection visit on Sunday, Khan stressed the need for fully developed green belts, additional tree plantations, and high-quality landscaping to enhance the visual appeal of the expressway. He emphasized that the quality of all work must meet sustainable and high standards, as the route is a major gateway for tourists traveling from Islamabad to Murree.

Progress So Far

According to NHA officials, several key upgrades have already been completed, including:

  • Installation of new lighting systems along the expressway
  • Placement of modern road reflectors for safer travel
  • Construction of a new toll plaza equipped with the E-Tag facility

Despite these advancements, the minister noted that work began five months ago and must now be completed without further delay.

Tourist Facilities to be Improved

Recognizing the heavy tourist influx on the Murree route, the minister inspected rest areas and directed the construction of additional washroom facilities on NHA land to provide better services for travelers.

Final Deadline and Inauguration Plans

A final deadline has been issued to the NHA for completion of all pending tasks, particularly the beautification of green belts. Once the project is finalized, the minister confirmed that the Prime Minister will be invited to inaugurate the upgraded Islamabad-Murree Expressway.

Looking Ahead

The upgradation project is expected to not only improve road safety but also enhance the travel experience for thousands of tourists heading to Murree each year. With landscaping, rest area facilities, and modern road infrastructure in place, the expressway aims to set a new benchmark for sustainable and scenic highways in Pakistan.
