The Islamabad Capital Territory (ICT) administration has intensified its M-Tag registration campaign, issuing 90,164 vehicle tags since November 14, as authorities prepare to implement strict vehicle identification enforcement across the city.
Officials say the surge in registrations comes amid heightened security measures and upcoming restrictions on vehicles entering the federal capital without M-Tags.
New M-Tag Registration Centers Opened
An ICT administration spokesperson confirmed that three new M-Tag registration centers have been set up and are now fully operational. These centers aim to reduce long queues and make registration more accessible for residents in different parts of Islamabad.
Authorities stated that additional staffing and extended working hours are also being considered to handle the growing number of applicants.
Citywide Enforcement to Begin Soon
Deputy Commissioner Islamabad announced that once M-Tag scanning systems are fully activated at entry and exit points, formal enforcement will begin citywide. Vehicles without valid M-Tags may face entry restrictions, fines, or legal action.
Residents have been strongly advised to complete the tagging process promptly to avoid inconvenience once enforcement starts.
Security Concerns Behind the Move
The decision to tighten vehicle monitoring follows a recent suicide blast in Islamabad, after which Federal Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi directed authorities to strengthen security arrangements.
Officials say the M-Tag system will allow law enforcement agencies to track vehicle movement in real time, helping prevent security breaches and improve emergency response.
More Than Just Security
Beyond security, authorities believe the M-Tag system will also help in:
- Better traffic management
- Improved toll and parking systems
- Data-based urban planning
Similar systems are already in use on Pakistan’s motorways and have shown positive results.
