The Islamabad administration has taken a significant step toward improving security and traffic monitoring by extending the mandatory M-Tag system to motorcycles across the federal capital. Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon announced that the second phase of the M-Tag campaign will officially begin on February 20, with motorcycle installations starting from 10:00am.
The M-Tag system, which uses electronic vehicle identification technology, has already been implemented successfully for cars and other vehicles. According to officials, more than 600,000 vehicles have been issued M-Tags so far, demonstrating strong public compliance and operational efficiency.
Who Will Need an M-Tag?
The new directive applies to all categories of motorcycles, including:
- Regular commuter bikes
- Ride-hailing and delivery motorcycles
- Heavy bikes
- Motorcycles used by Bykea and other services
Authorities clarified that the registration process for Bykea and online taxi services is being managed separately to ensure smooth onboarding without disruption to commercial operations.
How and Where to Get an M-Tag
Motorcycle owners can obtain M-Tags from 13 designated points across Islamabad. To complete the registration, applicants must present:
- Valid motorcycle registration documents
- National Identity Card (CNIC)
Officials have assured that the process is straightforward and designed to minimize inconvenience for citizens.
Why the M-Tag Expansion Matters
Deputy Commissioner Irfan Nawaz Memon emphasized that the extension of the M-Tag system aims to:
- Enhance urban security
- Improve vehicle tracking and identification
- Ensure safer and more regulated travel within the city
With motorcycles forming a large portion of daily traffic in Islamabad, authorities believe this move will help curb illegal activities, improve law enforcement response times, and support better traffic planning.
Public Cooperation Urged
The district administration has urged citizens to cooperate fully with the ongoing M-Tag campaign. Officials noted that public participation is essential for the success of the initiative and for maintaining a safer, more organized transport environment in the capital.
As Islamabad continues to modernize its traffic and security infrastructure, the inclusion of motorcycles in the M-Tag system marks a major milestone toward smarter and safer urban mobility.
