Islamabad–Lahore (M-2) Motorway Reopens After Political Rally Disruption

The Islamabad–Lahore (M-2) Motorway, one of Pakistan’s most important transportation arteries, has been reopened for all types of traffic after several days of closure prompted by a rally organized by a religious political group. Officials from the National Highway and Motorway Police (NHMP) confirmed on Sunday that traffic is now flowing smoothly across the route, restoring a crucial link between the federal capital and Punjab’s provincial hub.

The M-2 Motorway serves as a vital corridor for commuters, cargo transporters, and intercity travelers, handling thousands of vehicles daily. Earlier this week, the route was temporarily closed as a precautionary measure due to security and public safety concerns arising from the large-scale political gathering. The closure had caused significant disruptions in intercity travel and logistics operations between Islamabad, Lahore, and other connected regions.

Coordinated Efforts for Safe Reopening

Authorities from NHMP, in coordination with law enforcement and local administration, worked tirelessly to ensure that the motorway could reopen safely once the situation stabilized. Enhanced security checks and monitoring were conducted along the motorway to guarantee the safety of motorists.

An NHMP spokesperson emphasized the importance of driver cooperation and road discipline, urging citizens to adhere to traffic regulations and stay informed about travel updates through official NHMP channels. This proactive approach is part of ongoing efforts to minimize disruptions and enhance road safety during major public events or political movements that might affect national highways.

Travel Advisory for Motorists

Motorway authorities have advised travelers to plan their routes in advance, monitor official advisories, and avoid unnecessary travel when public demonstrations or gatherings are expected. With the M-2 now operational, commuters can expect normal traffic flow between Islamabad and Lahore, although officials continue to maintain heightened vigilance.

The reopening of the Islamabad–Lahore Motorway marks a return to normalcy for one of Pakistan’s busiest intercity routes and highlights the coordinated efforts of national agencies to ensure public safety and traffic management under challenging circumstances.
