Islamabad International Airport is preparing to introduce its first-ever Electric Vehicle (EV) charging station, marking a major milestone in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable and eco-friendly transportation. The EV charging facility will be part of a multi-purpose fuel and service complex planned within the airport premises, aimed at improving convenience for travelers and transport operators.
This development positions Islamabad International Airport among modern global airports that are adapting to cleaner energy solutions and evolving mobility trends.
Pakistan Airports Authority Announces EV Charging Facility
According to an official auction notice issued by the Pakistan Airports Authority (PAA), lease rights are being offered to establish and operate a petrol pump along with an EV charging station. The project will also include multiple vehicle-related service facilities, creating a comprehensive transport support hub at the airport.
The initiative reflects PAA’s focus on public-private partnerships to enhance airport infrastructure while keeping pace with technological and environmental advancements.
Location and Facilities Planned at the Airport
The fuel and EV charging complex will be developed at Plot No. F-180 C, covering a total area of 4,532 square yards. The site has been designated for a fully equipped service center, which will include:
- Electric vehicle charging station
- Conventional petrol pump
- Tuck shop
- Lube and oil change shop
- Tyre service shop
- Restaurant and refreshment area
These facilities will serve airport visitors, staff, commercial transport operators, ride-hailing services, and logistics vehicles.
Boost for Electric Vehicle Adoption in Pakistan
The addition of an EV charging station at Islamabad International Airport is a significant step toward encouraging electric vehicle usage in Pakistan. With fuel prices remaining volatile and environmental awareness increasing, EVs are gradually gaining popularity across the country. However, limited charging infrastructure has remained a key challenge.
Installing EV chargers at a major transport hub like an international airport will help address range anxiety and support the transition toward cleaner mobility.
Economic and Environmental Impact
Beyond sustainability, the project is expected to generate new commercial opportunities, improve passenger convenience, and modernize airport services. It may also serve as a blueprint for similar EV charging installations at other airports nationwide.
As Pakistan moves toward greener transport solutions, this initiative demonstrates a forward-thinking approach to infrastructure development.
