First Fleet of 146 Electric Buses Arrives in Islamabad

Islamabad’s Electric Bus Revolution: Expanding Routes for a Greener Future

Share

Islamabad is witnessing a transformative shift in public transportation with the introduction of a comprehensive electric bus service spanning 13 designated routes. Spearheaded by the Capital Development Authority (CDA), the project aims to promote eco-friendly commuting and sustainable urban mobility.

Extensive Route Network

The electric bus service covers key routes across the city, ensuring convenient access to major areas for daily commuters:

  • Faizabad to NUST Metro Station
  • Faizabad to Allama Iqbal Open University
  • Pak Secretariat to Kachhari Metro Station
  • National Library to PIMS Metro Station
  • PIMS to Bari Imam
  • Police Lines to D-12 Shah Allah Ditta
  • PIMS to NUST Metro Station
  • PIMS to Golra Sharif
  • Abpara to Tramari
  • Khanna Pul to Nellore
  • Faizabad to Peer Wadhai Mor
  • Golra Mor to Wah Cantt
  • Golra Mor to I-16

These routes strategically connect residential, educational, and business hubs, ensuring enhanced accessibility for the city’s residents.

Addressing Challenges and Infrastructure Expansion

While approximately 70 of the planned 160 electric buses are currently operational, the initiative faces challenges related to charging infrastructure. Presently, 16 charging stations are available, which experts consider inadequate for the entire fleet.

To address this, a new depot with additional charging facilities is under construction at Zero Point, promising seamless operations as the project scales up.

Environmental and Economic Impact

Environmental expert Muneer Ahmed highlighted the positive impact of the initiative, stating, “The project will significantly reduce greenhouse gas emissions, leading to a cleaner and healthier Islamabad.”

In addition to environmental benefits, the electric buses are expected to offer cost-effective transportation, reduce dependency on fossil fuels, and lower commuting expenses for residents.

A Model for Sustainable Urban Mobility

The CDA’s electric bus initiative positions Islamabad as a pioneer in sustainable public transportation in Pakistan. With plans to deploy the entire fleet and expand infrastructure, the service is set to become a model for urban mobility, contributing to a greener and healthier future.

This forward-thinking project aligns with global trends in sustainable transport, marking a significant step toward environmentally responsible urban living.
