In a bold move to address Islamabad’s worsening air pollution. The Ministry of Interior has officially launched a new vehicle emission testing campaign across the capital. Islamabad bans smoke emitting vehicles as part of this major crackdown, which was inaugurated on July 11. The initiative marks a significant step toward cleaner air and a healthier environment for residents.
Minister of State for Interior Talal Chaudhry personally led the launch by having his own vehicle tested under the newly implemented system. Backed by trained teams from Punjab and equipped with international-standard emission testing tools. The campaign is initially targeting government-owned vehicles but will soon expand to private ones as well.
A permanent vehicle testing site is being established near Old Parade Ground in Islamabad. Vehicles that pass the inspection will receive barcoded compliance stickers, verifying their eligibility to operate in the capital. On the other hand, those emitting excess smoke will face strict fines and penalties as part of the city’s effort to eliminate air pollution at its source.
“Some areas of Islamabad have seen the Air Quality Index (AQI) cross 200, which is alarming,” said Minister Talal Chaudhry. “We’re taking serious steps to reverse this trend, starting with vehicle inspections.”
Only emission-compliant vehicles will be permitted to enter or operate in Islamabad going forward, ensuring the crackdown leads to tangible environmental improvements.
This emission campaign is part of a larger infrastructure and environment reform directive issued by the Prime Minister. Past measures under this reform drive include the closure of traditional brick kilns and implementation of zigzag technology, both of which have shown results in reducing particulate pollution.

The government’s new focus on transportation emissions signals a deeper shift toward sustainable urban governance and public health. As Islamabad bans smoke emitting vehicles, authorities are prioritizing enforcement over leniency, especially with air quality levels regularly crossing dangerous thresholds.
