India Launches the World’s First Autonomous Electric Rickshaw “Swayamgati”

In a groundbreaking development for the global mobility sector, India has unveiled the world’s first autonomous electric rickshaw, named Swayamgati, developed by Omega Seiki Mobility. This innovation represents a major step toward integrating artificial intelligence (AI) and clean energy into the country’s transportation landscape.

Omega Seiki Mobility’s founder and chairman, Mr. Uday Narang, described the launch as a turning point for India’s mobility revolution, stating, “Autonomous vehicles are no longer futuristic—they are a present-day necessity. With Swayamgati, India can lead global trends.”

Adding to this, Mr. Vivek Dhawan, Chief Strategy Officer, emphasized that Swayamgati is the result of extensive research and collaborations: “It enables us to leapfrog barriers and bring intelligent systems into everyday mobility.”

Key Specifications and Features

Swayamgati is designed to provide safe, efficient, and eco-friendly transport using advanced AI technologies. Powered by a 10.3 kWh battery, the autonomous rickshaw can travel up to 120 kilometers on a single charge, offering a zero-emission alternative to conventional three-wheelers.

The AI-powered autonomy system features:

  • LiDAR sensors for real-time 3D mapping and obstacle detection
  • GPS and multi-sensor navigation for route precision
  • Obstacle detection range of up to six meters, ensuring safe operations even in congested areas

Smart Mobility Applications

The Swayamgati rickshaw is tailored for urban and industrial environments, including airports, smart campuses, industrial parks, and high-traffic zones. It can also switch to manual driving mode when required, offering flexibility in operation.

During Phase 1 testing, the vehicle successfully completed a 3-kilometer route with seven stops without any human intervention, marking a significant milestone in India’s autonomous transport capabilities.

Pricing and Availability

The base variant of Swayamgati is priced at around Rs. 400,000 (PKR 1.26 million), while the cargo variant costs approximately Rs. 415,000 (PKR 1.31 million). At present, Omega Seiki Mobility has not announced any plans for an international rollout, meaning a Pakistan launch remains unlikely for now.

Paving the Way for Smarter, Greener Cities

With Swayamgati, India cements its position as a pioneer in autonomous electric mobility, merging sustainability with cutting-edge technology. As AI-driven vehicles become increasingly practical, this launch signals the start of a new era in urban transportation efficiency and environmental responsibility.
