By The much-anticipated Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway (M-6) is progressing forward under a revised development plan, with officials confirming that the remaining sections will be completed gradually between 2028 and 2029. The update was shared during the National Assembly’s Question Hour, where the parliamentary secretary for communications provided clarity on the new completion timeline.
The M-6 motorway, which forms a critical middle link of the China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC) from Karachi to Peshawar, has faced multiple delays in the past—primarily due to funding hurdles and renegotiations in project structure. Originally, the National Highway Authority (NHA) had signed a Public Private Partnership (PPP) agreement in December 2022, targeting completion by December 2025, including a six-month period for financial closure. However, complexities in securing investment extended the schedule.
International Collaboration Strengthens Project Momentum
The motorway’s development has continued to receive attention at key international forums. The project was reviewed during the Joint Working Group on Communications held on September 3, 2024, followed by discussions at the Joint Cooperation Committee (JCC) meeting in Beijing on September 26, 2025. These meetings reaffirmed China’s ongoing commitment to supporting Pakistan’s highway infrastructure as part of broader CPEC cooperation.
New Bidding Open to Chinese Firms
Officials confirmed that Pakistan has opened the bidding process to Chinese companies for the Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway, along with two other infrastructure segments set to be developed under the PPP model. This approach is intended to attract foreign investment, reduce financial pressure on the government, and speed up project execution through shared risk and responsibility.
Why the M-6 Motorway Matters
Once completed, the Hyderabad–Sukkur Motorway will:
- Connect southern Sindh to central Pakistan via high-speed route
- Reduce travel time between major cities
- Support trade movement from Karachi ports to up-country markets
- Boost industrial and logistics activity along the CPEC corridor
The M-6 is the only missing link in the Karachi–Peshawar motorway chain. Its completion will create a continuous, modern, high-speed highway network across Pakistan, accelerating economic integration and improving national mobility.
