In a major boost to Pakistan’s electric vehicle (EV) market, Hub Power Company (Hubco) has announced that BYD sold more than 2,000 vehicles within just six months of entering Pakistan. Demand has been particularly strong for the Shark model, with over 500 confirmed orders.
Currently, BYD vehicles are being imported into Pakistan as completely built units (CBUs) under standard duty terms. However, with sales momentum accelerating, Hubco and its partners are preparing to shift towards local assembly.
To strengthen BYD’s presence, Hubco is setting up a completely knocked down (CKD) assembly plant in Gharo, Sindh, with an annual capacity of 25,000 units. According to Asad Ali of Topline Securities, the financial close of the $150 million project is expected by the last quarter of 2025.
The plant will be financed through a 60:40 debt-to-equity ratio, backed by commitments from both local and international lenders. Once financing is secured, production is expected to begin within two years.
The project is a 50:50 joint venture between Hub Power Holding, a wholly owned subsidiary of Hubco, and Mega Conglomerate. Notably, unlike its ventures in Thailand and Brazil, BYD has not taken equity in this partnership. This makes it BYD’s first global collaboration without direct ownership, signaling confidence in Hubco’s execution capabilities.
Hubco also announced plans to install EV chargers every 150–200 km along the Karachi-Peshawar Motorway (M-2) within the next six months. This charging network is expected to play a crucial role in making long-distance EV travel feasible and convenient for Pakistani consumers.
Meanwhile, Sazgar Engineering Works has revealed its own plans to launch CKD assembly of TANK-500 and CANNON plug-in hybrid vehicles by March 2026, further diversifying Pakistan’s EV and hybrid market.
The rapid success of BYD EV sales in Pakistan, coupled with the upcoming Gharo CKD plant, highlights the growing shift toward sustainable mobility in the country. With major investments, new infrastructure, and strong consumer demand, Pakistan is positioning itself as a rising EV hub in South Asia.
