In a major step toward promoting clean and sustainable transportation, the district administration of Gujrat has begun preparations for the launch of an electric bus service, expected to become operational by December 2025. The project is being implemented under the directives of Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz, as part of the provincial government’s broader push for eco-friendly mobility solutions.

Official Site Visit to Review Preparations

Assistant Commissioner Bilal Zubair led an on-site inspection to assess the proposed routes and bus stop locations for the upcoming service. He was joined by Regional Transport Authority Secretary Saddam Hussain, Municipal Committee Jalalpur Jattan Chief Officer Musharraf Baig, and other key officials from the district administration.

During the visit, the team evaluated designated areas for the installation of infrastructure necessary to support electric bus operations — including charging stations, passenger shelters, and route signage. The inspection emphasized timely completion to ensure readiness before the project’s launch date.

Deployment of 28 Electric Buses

According to officials, a fleet of 28 fully electric buses will be introduced in the first phase of the project. The initiative aims to improve urban mobility, reduce traffic congestion, and significantly lower carbon emissions across the district. Assistant Commissioner Zubair has directed relevant departments to accelerate construction work on bus stops and ensure all facilities are available for commuters prior to launch.

Environmentally Sustainable and Modern Transport

Speaking on the occasion, Bilal Zubair stated that the new electric bus system will offer modern, affordable, and environmentally sustainable travel options to residents of Gujrat. He reaffirmed that the project is progressing according to plan and is expected to commence operations before the end of 2025.

Supporting Punjab’s Green Transport Vision

The upcoming service in Gujrat is part of a broader strategy by the Punjab government to modernize public transportation and promote clean energy adoption in urban centers. Similar electric bus projects are being introduced in other major cities, reflecting the government’s commitment to reducing environmental pollution and enhancing passenger comfort.
