Second Phase of Green Line BRT Karachi to Launch in August

Karachi’s public transportation network is getting a major boost as the second phase of the Green Line Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project is set to begin in the second week of August 2025. This long-awaited extension follows the successful operation of the initial phase, which began in 2021, connecting Surjani Town to Numaish.

Now, the new 1.8-kilometer corridor will extend the line from Capri Cinema to Municipal Park in Saddar, a densely populated commercial hub. This phase includes the construction of three new bus stations and the installation of two dedicated traffic signals to streamline BRT operations and improve commuter safety.

Rs. 5 Billion Allocated for New Construction

With Rs. 5 billion recently allocated for this phase, the total investment in the Green Line BRT has reached Rs. 30 billion. Initially, the Federal Government had allocated Rs. 42.7 billion for the complete development of the Green Line BRT system under the Public Sector Development Programme (PSDP) 2025–26.

Tenders for the new phase have already been awarded, signaling the start of active construction. This phase will act as a vital link between northern and central Karachi, improving connectivity for thousands of daily commuters.

Urban Impact and Environmental Benefits

Once fully operational and integrated with Karachi’s wider public transit ecosystem, including the Orange Line and future mass transit systems, the Green Line BRT Karachi is expected to deliver numerous urban benefits:

  • Reduced travel time across major commercial routes
  • Lower vehicle congestion on main roads
  • Decreased carbon emissions due to mass public transport usage
  • Improved commuter experience with reliable, safe, and affordable travel options

A Step Forward in Karachi’s Urban Mobility

The expansion of the Green Line BRT marks a critical milestone in Karachi’s transportation infrastructure development. It reflects the government’s commitment to modernizing urban transit, reducing environmental impact, and providing the city’s 20+ million residents with an efficient alternative to private transport.
