The Green Electric Bus Service has officially commenced operations in Gujar Khan, marking a major milestone in Punjab’s public transport reform agenda. The launch represents the first implementation of the electric bus project at the tehsil level, under an initiative spearheaded by Maryam Nawaz Sharif, aimed at modernizing transport while reducing environmental impact.
The inauguration ceremony was attended by Provincial Minister Khawaja Manshaullah Butt, Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan, members of the National and Provincial Assemblies, and senior district administration officials.
Route and Service Coverage
According to officials, the electric bus service will operate on a dedicated route connecting the Gujar Khan Bus Terminal, Sohawa city, and the Police Complex, providing reliable and affordable transport for daily commuters. The service is expected to significantly reduce travel difficulties for residents while offering a cleaner alternative to conventional fuel-based buses.
Government’s Vision for Public Welfare
Addressing the ceremony, Khawaja Manshaullah Butt said the electric bus project was designed to provide modern, safe, and comfortable travel facilities to the public. He emphasized that the expansion of the service to the tehsil level reflects the government’s commitment to inclusive development.
He further highlighted that the Pakistan Muslim League-Nawaz has consistently prioritized public welfare initiatives. He pointed to key provincial programs such as Suthra Punjab, ration card schemes, the Green Bus Service, and Sasta Sahulat Bazaars, which aim to ease the cost of living and improve quality of life across the province.
Free Travel and Security Features
Transport Minister Bilal Akbar Khan announced that 14 electric buses will operate in Gujar Khan during the initial phase. He also confirmed that senior citizens, women, and students will be allowed to travel free of charge, making the service both inclusive and socially supportive.
To enhance passenger safety, each electric bus is equipped with seven onboard security cameras, ensuring round-the-clock monitoring and improved law-and-order compliance.
Province-Wide Expansion Plan
Bilal Akbar Khan further revealed that the Punjab government plans to deploy 1,100 electric buses across the province during the current year, with an additional 1,500 buses scheduled for next year. This large-scale rollout is expected to transform urban and semi-urban mobility while contributing to reduced fuel consumption and lower carbon emissions.
A Step Toward Sustainable Transport
The launch of the Green Electric Bus Service in Gujar Khan signals a decisive shift toward sustainable, affordable, and citizen-friendly public transport in Punjab. If implemented effectively, the project could serve as a model for other cities and tehsils across Pakistan.
