In a move aimed at supporting public safety and improving environmental health, the Punjab government has announced the temporary closure of all Emissions Testing System (ETS) booths across Lahore today due to ongoing rainfall. According to officials, ETS booths are located in open areas, and the closure is a precautionary measure to protect both the ETS staff and the public during the wet weather conditions.
Public Advisory
Citizens are advised not to visit ETS booths today and are encouraged to call the helpline at 1373 for updates and additional information regarding rescheduled services or booth availability in their area.
Free ETS Deadline Extended to August 31, 2025
In a significant development, Punjab Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz has approved the extension of the free emissions testing deadline. Previously set to expire on June 30, 2025, the free ETS service will now continue until August 31, 2025. This extension provides motorists in Lahore with more time to test their vehicles at no cost and ensure compliance with emission regulations.
Transition to Paid Testing Delayed
Earlier, Raja Jahangir Anwar, Secretary of the Environment Protection and Climate Change Department, had announced that once the free service ended, emissions testing would be outsourced to authorized private vehicle dealerships, where motorists would be required to pay Rs. 400 per test.
The current extension postpones this transition, giving citizens additional months to benefit from cost-free emissions testing before the paid model is implemented.
Promoting Cleaner Air and Public Health
The initiative is part of the Punjab government’s broader strategy to combat air pollution and improve environmental sustainability in Lahore, one of Pakistan’s most pollution-affected cities. Emissions testing helps identify high-polluting vehicles and contributes to efforts aimed at reducing smog and harmful air particulates.
