In a groundbreaking move to promote electric vehicles (EVs) and green technology, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has announced a free E-Bikes scheme for students in Pakistan. During a recent meeting in Islamabad, the Prime Minister unveiled this initiative as part of the government’s broader effort to accelerate the adoption of electric mobility in the country.
E-Vehicles Policy to Be Finalized by November
The Prime Minister set a clear deadline of November to finalize Pakistan’s comprehensive E-Vehicles policy. This policy will be developed in consultation with various federating units and stakeholders to ensure it meets the needs of the entire country.
Focus on Financial Model and Licensing Improvements
During the meeting, PM Sharif emphasized the necessity of establishing a robust financial model to support the widespread production and adoption of electric vehicles. He also called for improvements in licensing regulations for EV manufacturing, ensuring that both local and international manufacturers can operate efficiently in Pakistan.
Free E-Bikes for Students: Encouraging Academic Excellence
A standout announcement from the meeting was the introduction of a scheme to provide free E-Bikes to top-performing students from government schools. This initiative, inspired by the successful laptop distribution program, aims to reward academic excellence while promoting the use of eco-friendly technology. By encouraging students to use electric motorbikes, the government hopes to foster a generation that is both tech-savvy and environmentally conscious.
Electric Public Transport for Islamabad
In addition to the E-Bikes scheme, the Prime Minister directed the Capital Development Authority (CDA) to devise a detailed plan for integrating electric-powered public transport in Islamabad. This move is part of the government’s strategy to reduce the city’s carbon footprint and modernize its public transport infrastructure.
Progress in Electric Vehicle Manufacturing
Since 2022, Pakistan has issued forty-nine licenses for the production of two and three-wheeled electric vehicles, with twenty-five factories already operational. In a major milestone for the country’s EV industry, the first license for domestic production of four-wheeled electric vehicles was issued in September. The first locally produced electric car is expected to be on the market by December, marking a significant step forward in Pakistan’s journey toward sustainable mobility.
Expanding EV Infrastructure: Recharging Stations
To support the growing number of electric vehicles, the government is prioritizing the establishment of recharging stations across the country. These stations will be essential in facilitating the widespread use of electric vehicles and reducing dependence on imported petrol and diesel.
A Future Driven by Electric Vehicles
Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif’s recent announcements signal the government’s strong commitment to advancing electric vehicle technology in Pakistan. By incentivizing academic excellence through the E-Bikes scheme and pushing for EV infrastructure development, the government is taking decisive steps towards a cleaner, greener future.
