Sialkot International Airport faced a major disruption on Tuesday as flight operations were suspended for 12 hours following heavy flooding across the city and its surrounding areas. According to a Notice to Airmen (NOTAM) issued by the Pakistan Civil Aviation Authority (CAA), the airport closure remained in effect from 10:00 a.m. to 10:00 p.m., causing widespread inconvenience for travelers.

The sudden suspension left many passengers stranded at the airport, while several airlines were forced to adjust or cancel scheduled flights. Travelers reported long waiting hours and last-minute changes to their itineraries, highlighting the significant impact of the temporary shutdown.

Safety Measures Taken

Airport officials emphasized that the decision was made in the interest of passenger and aircraft safety. Runway operations could not continue as floodwater had entered parts of the premises, making conditions unsafe for takeoffs and landings. Authorities confirmed that normal flight operations will only resume once the floodwater is completely drained and the runway is declared safe.

Impact on Passengers and Airlines

The closure disrupted both domestic and international flights, particularly affecting business travelers and overseas Pakistanis who frequently use Sialkot Airport. Airlines operating from the airport coordinated with passengers to provide updates and rebooking options, but the situation still caused frustration and delays.

Flooding Challenges in Sialkot

Sialkot, an industrial hub of Pakistan, has been dealing with heavy rains and urban flooding in recent weeks. The incident at the airport highlights the vulnerability of critical infrastructure to extreme weather conditions. Officials assured that contingency measures are being put in place to prevent similar disruptions in the future.

As the city works to manage the flooding situation, travelers are advised to stay updated through official airline channels and the Civil Aviation Authority for the latest flight information.
