In a significant move toward cleaner, more inclusive public transport, the Punjab government has announced the launch of a modern electric green bus service in the Sargodha Division. The initiative is scheduled to begin on August 14, and aims to provide affordable, eco-friendly, and accessible mobility solutions to the region’s residents.
The announcement was made by Regional Transport Authority (RTA) Secretary Khalid Mahmood, who confirmed that the service is part of the provincial government’s long-term strategy for sustainable urban mobility.
Phase 1 Rollout: 72 Electric Buses Across 4 Districts
During the first phase, a total of 72 electric buses will be deployed across four districts:
- Sargodha: 48 buses
- Khushab: 12 buses
- Mianwali: 6 buses
- Bhakkar: 6 buses
These routes will be carefully designed to serve densely populated areas, improving daily commutes and reducing congestion and emissions in urban zones.
Free Travel for Vulnerable Groups
A key feature of this initiative is its focus on inclusivity. The Punjab government has confirmed free travel for:
- Senior citizens
- Students
- Persons with disabilities
This social welfare measure is designed to ease the financial burden on underprivileged groups and encourage greater access to education, healthcare, and employment opportunities.
A Step Toward Sustainable Urban Transport
The electric green bus service in Sargodha aligns with broader national and provincial efforts to:
- Reduce carbon emissions
- Enhance public transit infrastructure
- Promote clean energy adoption
By investing in electric vehicles, the Punjab government is setting a precedent for future-ready public transportation, especially in secondary cities often overlooked in large-scale development projects.
The launch of the Electric Green Bus Service in Sargodha marks a crucial step toward climate-friendly and citizen-centric public transport in Pakistan. With zero-emission vehicles, free travel for vulnerable groups, and service across multiple districts, this initiative not only enhances mobility but also contributes to social equity and environmental protection.
As the service kicks off on August 14, it symbolizes a new era for regional transportation in Punjab, driven by innovation, accessibility, and sustainability.
