By The Punjab Chief Minister has officially inaugurated the electric bus service in Rawalpindi, marking a major step toward sustainable public transportation in the region. The new initiative aims to modernize urban mobility, reduce reliance on diesel-powered vehicles, and provide residents with a cleaner and more efficient mode of travel.
Beginning with 45 electric buses deployed across four strategically planned routes, the service has been designed to improve connectivity between Rawalpindi’s essential commercial zones, residential areas, and its cantonment region. The project is expected to significantly reduce traffic congestion and air pollution, two longstanding challenges in the city.
Four Main Routes Announced
The electric buses will initially operate on the following routes:
Route 1: Saddar to Qabristan Chowk (7 km – 7 buses)
This route passes through important commercial areas including Qasim Market and Shalley Valley, ensuring smooth access for daily commuters navigating one of the busiest parts of Rawalpindi.
Route 2: Fawara Chowk to Koral Chowk (11.3 km – 8 buses)
Covering major landmarks such as Liaquat Bagh, Sir Syed Road, and Old Airport Road, this route enhances connectivity between densely populated neighborhoods and business districts.
Route 3: Saddar Metro Bus Station to Munawar Colony (7 buses)
Operating along Tulsa Road, this route strengthens transport access to a significant residential belt within the city.
Route 4: Marrir Metro Bus Station to Motorway Chowk (13.1 km – 14 buses)
Linking The Mall, Peshawar Road, and the Motorway, this is the longest route and a vital connector to major highways and intercity travel points.
Charging Infrastructure and Passenger Capacity
A dedicated charging station has been established at the Saddar GTS bus stand on Adamjee Road, ensuring uninterrupted operations. Additionally, a new depot is planned on Peshawar Road to support future expansions.
Officials estimate that the electric buses will collectively transport around 24,000 passengers daily, offering seamless integration with the metro bus networks of Rawalpindi and Islamabad.
Training & Environmental Benefits
All drivers and ticketing staff have completed training to ensure smooth and professional service. As fully electric vehicles, the buses will help cut carbon emissions and noise pollution, presenting an environmentally friendly alternative to the diesel buses currently operating in the city.
Future Expansion Plans
Authorities have confirmed that the service will expand in later phases, with additional buses and newer routes to be added depending on passenger demand and service performance.
The launch marks a significant milestone for Rawalpindi, positioning the city among Pakistan’s growing urban centers embracing sustainable public transport solutions.
