As part of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif’s Transport Vision 2030, the Punjab government has officially expanded its eco-friendly public transport network to Bahawalpur, marking another major step toward sustainable urban mobility. The introduction of modern electric buses in the city aims to improve commuting standards while reducing environmental impact and dependence on fossil fuels.
This latest rollout is a continuation of Punjab’s province-wide transition to clean and smart transportation. After the successful implementation of similar electric bus services in 14 cities across Punjab, Bahawalpur has now joined the list, highlighting the government’s commitment to inclusive and environmentally responsible public transport.
Free Travel for Students and Senior Citizens
In a significant relief for the public, the Punjab government has integrated a social welfare component into the electric bus service. Students and senior citizens in Bahawalpur can now travel free of cost on these electric buses, easing the financial burden on families amid rising fuel prices and transportation costs.
Eligible passengers can avail themselves of this facility through the TCash Card system, which enables seamless, cashless, and economical travel. The system ensures transparency, efficiency, and accessibility, making quality public transport available to all segments of society.
Clean, Smart, and Comfortable Public Transport
The electric buses introduced in Bahawalpur are designed to offer a clean, noise-free, and comfortable commuting experience. Equipped with air conditioning, comfortable seating, and smart tracking systems, these buses prioritize passenger safety and convenience while significantly reducing carbon emissions in the city’s public transport sector.
To ensure uninterrupted operations, the provincial government is also developing dedicated charging stations and modern bus stops along key routes in Bahawalpur. This supporting infrastructure will help maintain high operational efficiency and service reliability.
Supporting Punjab’s Clean Air Program
The expansion of electric buses aligns closely with the Punjab Clean Air Program, which focuses on combating smog and environmental degradation through the adoption of Electric Vehicles (EVs). By replacing conventional fuel-powered buses with electric alternatives, the initiative contributes to improved air quality and a healthier urban environment.
With the launch of the electric bus service in Bahawalpur, Punjab continues to set an example in sustainable transportation, blending environmental responsibility with social inclusion and modern mobility solutions.
