By The federal government has decided to introduce the E-Tag system for motorcycles in Islamabad as part of the next phase of its digital vehicle monitoring programme. The move aims to enhance security surveillance, improve traffic discipline, and strengthen law enforcement across the federal capital.
According to a written reply submitted by the district administration to the Senate Standing Committee on Information Technology and Telecommunication, RFID-based E-Tag readers are being installed at important locations across the city. These readers will enable authorities to monitor and track tagged vehicles in real time, ensuring better control over vehicle movement in Islamabad.
The project is being implemented by Safe City Islamabad in coordination with the Frontier Works Organization (FWO) and under the supervision of Islamabad Police. Officials stated that the system will help law enforcement agencies quickly identify unregistered, stolen, or suspicious vehicles, including motorcycles, which make up a large portion of daily traffic in the capital.
To support the initiative, the Ministry of Interior and Narcotics Control, along with the ICT Administration and FWO, has launched a wider vehicle screening and entry management programme. Multiple M-Tag and E-Tag issuance centres and booths have been set up across Islamabad to make the registration and verification process easier for vehicle owners.
FWO has provided the technical infrastructure for the project, including system installation, maintenance, and operational support at issuance centres. The E-Tag system has also been integrated with the Islamabad Excise and Taxation Department, allowing real-time data sharing through a secure and encrypted network to ensure accurate vehicle verification.
The installation drive for M-Tags and E-Tags began on November 14, 2025. By December 7, 2025, a total of 63,329 vehicles had already been fitted with electronic tags. Authorities believe that extending the system to motorcycles will close existing monitoring gaps and significantly improve security coverage.
Officials added that the expansion will help reduce traffic violations, prevent crime, track stolen vehicles, and improve overall traffic management. The inclusion of motorcycles is expected to make Islamabad’s digital surveillance and policing system more effective and comprehensive.
