In a move set to revive nostalgia and boost cultural activity, the Government of Sindh has announced plans to bring back the drive-in cinema experience in Karachi. The decision was made during a high-level meeting of the Culture, Tourism, and Antiquities Department, chaired by Provincial Minister Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah.
The meeting brought together senior officials, including departmental secretaries and key stakeholders, to review ongoing performance and discuss future initiatives aimed at revitalizing the province’s cultural and tourism landscape.
Revival of a Classic Entertainment Experience
Drive-in cinemas, once a popular form of entertainment, offer a unique movie-watching experience where audiences can enjoy films from the comfort of their vehicles. The proposed revival in Karachi aims to reintroduce this concept to modern audiences, blending nostalgia with contemporary entertainment trends.
Officials noted that the project will move forward once the current phase of austerity measures — introduced under directives from the Sindh government — is completed. The initiative is expected to provide a new recreational outlet for families and youth while contributing to the city’s entertainment sector.
Expansion of Tourism and Cultural Projects
Beyond the drive-in cinema revival, the Sindh government has outlined several initiatives to strengthen tourism and cultural infrastructure across the province. One of the major projects includes the launch of the third phase of a train safari connecting Karachi to Sukkur, aimed at promoting domestic tourism and showcasing Sindh’s heritage.
Authorities are also considering activating arts councils in cities such as Hyderabad, Mirpurkhas, and Shaheed Benazirabad to encourage artistic expression and community engagement.
Reopening Libraries and Cultural Centers
As part of broader cultural revival efforts, several public libraries and cultural centers will soon reopen. Facilities in Khairpur Nathan Shah, Moro, and Kashmore are expected to become accessible again, providing educational and cultural resources to local communities.
New Tourism Attractions in the Pipeline
The government is also focusing on enhancing tourism attractions. Plans are underway to introduce ferry and water sports services at Keenjhar Lake, one of the largest freshwater lakes in the country. These initiatives aim to attract tourists and create new economic opportunities.
Additionally, preparations are being made to host the Gorakh Festival at Gorakh Hill Station, a popular hill destination known for its scenic beauty and cooler climate. The festival is expected to draw visitors from across Pakistan once conditions improve.
Focus on Cultural Development
Speaking at the meeting, Syed Zulfiqar Ali Shah emphasized the government’s commitment to strengthening cultural and tourism infrastructure while addressing the concerns of artists, writers, and poets. Efforts are underway to create a more streamlined system to support the creative community and promote cultural heritage.
The revival of drive-in cinemas in Karachi marks a significant step toward enhancing the city’s entertainment landscape. Combined with tourism expansion and cultural initiatives, the Sindh government’s plans signal a broader effort to promote heritage, recreation, and economic activity across the province.
