In a major step toward sustainable urban mobility, a fleet of 45 Chinese-made electric buses has arrived in Rawalpindi and is set to begin operations on 10 designated routes this week. The initiative marks another milestone in the Punjab government’s plan to introduce 1,100 electric vehicles (EVs) across the province, transforming public transport while significantly reducing carbon emissions.

Modern, Comfortable, and Eco-Friendly Travel

The newly arrived buses are equipped with air-conditioning, free Wi-Fi, automated ticketing systems, and wheelchair-accessible designs to ensure comfort and inclusivity for all passengers, according to a report by Gwadar Pro. Each bus represents the government’s commitment to providing affordable, safe, and environment-friendly public transport for citizens of the twin cities.

Integration with the Metro Bus Network

The Punjab Transport Department confirmed that the new electric fleet will be linked with the Rawalpindi-Islamabad Metro Bus Service, enabling seamless intercity connectivity. This integration is expected to ease daily commuting for thousands of passengers and reduce traffic congestion on key urban corridors.

Transport Department PRO Sheraz shared that 200 electric buses are already operational across nine districts in Punjab. The deployment so far includes:

  • Lahore – 40 buses
  • Faisalabad – 30 buses
  • Sargodha – 33 buses
  • Dera Ghazi Khan – 24 buses
  • Sahiwal – 16 buses
  • Pakpattan – 15 buses
  • Mianwali – 15 buses
  • Wazirabad – 15 buses
  • Muzaffarabad – 17 buses

The new Rawalpindi fleet expands this network further, bringing the province closer to its long-term goal of an electric, sustainable, and efficient public transport system.

Supporting Punjab’s Green Mobility Vision

The introduction of electric buses in Rawalpindi aligns with the Punjab government’s Green Mobility Initiative, which aims to reduce the province’s carbon footprint and dependence on fossil fuels. The electric fleet not only cuts emissions but also lowers operational costs and noise pollution compared to conventional diesel buses.

By connecting the service with existing metro and feeder routes, the initiative enhances last-mile connectivity, ensuring that commuters can travel across Rawalpindi and Islamabad efficiently and affordably.

Toward a Cleaner, Smarter Future

The arrival of these 45 electric buses marks another step in Punjab’s modernization of its public transport infrastructure. With the planned rollout of over 1,100 EVs, the province is positioning itself as a leader in clean and smart mobility in Pakistan.

As these buses hit the roads, citizens can look forward to a more reliable, comfortable, and environmentally conscious commute—symbolizing a shift toward a greener and more sustainable urban future.
