CDA to Redesign Faizabad Interchange for Long-Term Traffic Solution

The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has decided to scrap its earlier plan to widen the loops of the iconic Faizabad Interchange and will instead embark on a complete redesign and expansion of the entire structure. This strategic move aims to tackle the long-standing traffic congestion that has plagued the interchange for decades.

The decision was finalized during a high-level meeting chaired by CDA Chairman Mohammad Ali Randhawa. Initially, the authority had invited bids for a Rs. 200 million project to widen the loops of the 1990s-era interchange. While bids were opened, the CDA refrained from issuing a work order after determining that loop widening would only serve as a short-term measure.

“We want a permanent solution for the next three decades,” said CDA Member Engineering Syed Nafasat Raza, explaining the shift in approach. “The chairman has directed us to design the entire project.”

New Master Plan in the Works

Three leading consultant firms have now been engaged to prepare a comprehensive master plan for the redesigned interchange. Once completed, the proposal will be submitted to the Interior Minister Mohsin Naqvi for approval.

The redesign will prioritize smooth traffic flow, improved safety, and capacity expansion to accommodate future urban growth. Construction is expected to be executed in phases, depending on the approved design and available funding.

Addressing Chronic Congestion

Faizabad Interchange, which connects Murree Road to the Islamabad Expressway, is a critical traffic hub and a common site for protest gatherings. The interior minister has previously directed the CDA to prioritize this project to resolve daily bottlenecks, particularly on the Murree Road–Islamabad Expressway loop.

With a full-scale redesign now on the table, authorities aim to transform the interchange into a future-proof infrastructure asset that can handle Islamabad’s growing transportation demands for decades to come.
