The Capital Development Authority (CDA) has announced plans to construct a new interchange that will connect Sector I-16 directly with the Srinagar Highway, marking a significant step toward improving road infrastructure and mobility in Islamabad. The update was shared in a written reply by Federal Minister for Interior and Narcotics Control, Senator Syed Mohsin Raza Naqvi, during a session of the National Assembly.
According to the minister, the interchange is part of the Islamabad Master Plan, which includes a planned road corridor linking Sector I-16 with one of the city’s busiest and most essential expressways. The new interchange will be developed at the intersection of 17th Avenue and the Srinagar Highway, which is strategically positioned to reduce congestion and improve accessibility for residents and commuters.
Development of Road Networks Around the Interchange
As part of the broader development strategy, the CDA is currently working on Sector H-16, while also preparing to construct the service road between Sectors H-16 and H-17 to enhance connectivity across these zones. Additionally, 16th Avenue, located between Sectors H-15 and H-16, will be developed in accordance with the master plan and future traffic needs.
The number of underpasses and additional interchanges along 16th Avenue will be finalized after the detailed design and traffic feasibility studies are completed.
Supporting Urban Growth and Future Traffic Demand
Sector I-16, which is under active development and witnessing rising residential construction, currently faces no major traffic obstacles. However, officials emphasized that the planned interchange and avenue construction are aimed at meeting future housing expansion and growing traffic volume in the area.
Senator Mohsin Naqvi noted that Islamabad’s avenue system is carefully designed to maintain smooth traffic flow throughout the federal capital. He highlighted ongoing work on 10th Avenue, which is already underway and intended to further enhance internal connectivity.
Expected Benefits
Once completed, the new interchange and accompanying road developments are expected to:
- Reduce travel times between northern and central Islamabad
- Improve access to I-16 and surrounding localities
- Support residential and commercial growth in newly developing sectors
- Distribute traffic more efficiently across major corridors
Urban planners view the project as an essential investment to support future population growth and ensure balanced city expansion.
