By BMW has updated its i5 electric sedan lineup in the United States by adding a native NACS charging port across all variants. The move makes the i5 the first BMW model in the U.S. to fully adopt the Tesla style charging standard across its entire range.
Previously, the rollout of the NACS port was limited to the top spec M60 variant. Other versions such as the xDrive40 and eDrive40 continued to use the older CCS charging system. This created confusion among buyers and dealers during the early phase of the launch.
Now, BMW has confirmed that all i5 models built for the U.S. market from March 2026 onward will come equipped with the NACS charging port as standard.
Charging Improvements and Owner Benefits
The update brings several advantages for new i5 owners. Each vehicle now includes charging adapters in the box, making it easier to use different charging networks.
BMW provides the following with new i5 EVs:
- AC charging adapter for standard charging stations
- DC charging adapter for CCS compatible fast chargers
- Native support for Tesla Supercharger network
With native NACS support, drivers can access Tesla Superchargers more easily. The i5 also includes Plug and Charge functionality, which allows automatic authentication and payment during charging sessions.
To use this feature, owners must link a payment method through the My BMW app using a Shell Recharge account. Once set up, charging at supported stations becomes a seamless process.
BMW is also offering additional incentives for new buyers. The i5 comes with 1000 kilowatt hours of complimentary charging at Electrify America stations or coverage for up to two years, whichever comes first.
However, not all customers benefit equally from this update. Owners of older i5 models with CCS ports will need to purchase compatible adapters separately. BMW recommends approved third party options to ensure compatibility and safety.
In addition, BMW plans to roll out a software update for existing 2026 i5 models with CCS ports. This update will enable access to Tesla Superchargers in early spring.
The shift to NACS reflects a broader trend in the U.S. electric vehicle market. More automakers are adopting the Tesla developed charging standard to improve charging accessibility and convenience.
