In a significant move to strengthen religious tourism and national infrastructure, the National Highway Authority (NHA) has approved a plan to link Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib with Pakistan’s expanding motorway network. The project, announced during a high-level NHA meeting chaired by Federal Minister for Communications Abdul Aleem Khan, is expected to greatly improve access to two of the most sacred sites in Sikhism.
Guru Nanak Expressway: A Landmark Project
The new motorway will be named the Guru Nanak Expressway, reflecting its spiritual and cultural importance. Abdul Aleem Khan described the project as a landmark initiative not only for Pakistan’s Sikh community but also for international pilgrims visiting from across the globe. Once completed, the expressway will offer safer, faster, and more comfortable travel to Kartarpur and Nankana Sahib.
Construction to Begin From Sialkot
The minister directed the NHA to immediately begin construction of the Sialkot–Kartarpur Motorway, noting that starting the project from Sialkot would bring added benefits to nearby regions. Improved connectivity is expected to stimulate economic activity in surrounding cities such as Narang Mandi and Bado Malhi, opening new opportunities for trade, tourism, and employment.
Modern Infrastructure Along the Route
According to the project outline, the Guru Nanak Expressway will feature state-of-the-art infrastructure, including three-star, four-star, and five-star hotels to accommodate pilgrims and tourists. Authorities have also been instructed to develop world-class rest areas, modern service stations, and shopping malls along the route, enhancing the overall travel experience and encouraging longer stays.
These developments aim to position the expressway not just as a transit route, but as a complete religious tourism corridor that supports hospitality, retail, and local businesses.
International Promotion and Investment
To maximize the project’s impact, Abdul Aleem Khan announced plans to promote the Guru Nanak Expressway internationally. Roadshows and advertisements will be launched in London, Canada, and the United States, targeting overseas Sikh communities and investors. The minister also directed NHA to include Sikh holy sites in international promotional campaigns to attract foreign investment and religious tourism.
A Game Changer for Religious Tourism
Calling the initiative a game changer, Abdul Aleem Khan emphasized that the Kartarpur–Nankana Sahib motorway project has the potential to transform Pakistan’s religious tourism infrastructure. He stressed that NHA must adhere to the highest construction standards to ensure safety, durability, and long-term economic benefits.
Once completed, the Guru Nanak Expressway is expected to strengthen Pakistan’s image as a welcoming destination for religious pilgrims, while delivering lasting economic and infrastructural gains to the region.
