Google has officially started replacing the old Google Assistant with Gemini on Android Auto, bringing a major upgrade to the driving experience for millions of users around the world. The rollout has begun globally in forty five languages, making Gemini the new AI brain inside more than two hundred fifty million compatible cars.
Drivers who already switched from Google Assistant to Gemini on their Android phones will automatically see Gemini appear when Android Auto starts in their vehicle. This shift marks one of Google’s biggest updates to in car voice assistance in years, offering faster responses, natural conversations and far more advanced features.
For a long time, Google Assistant handled basic tasks. It could set destinations, play music and manage small settings, but it often felt limited. Gemini changes that completely. It understands context better, responds more naturally and can perform deeper searches across apps and stored information on your phone.
In Google’s latest demo video, Gemini shows its new abilities in real driving scenarios. It can search for addresses hidden inside emails and instantly set them as destinations in Google Maps. It can also find restaurants that match very specific filters such as pizzerias with unique sauces or flower shops that carry a certain type of bouquet. Drivers can even ask it to locate EV charging stations from a preferred operator and select one that has no waiting line.
Gemini can also read group chats, summarize conversations and send replies while keeping the driver focused on the road. Another powerful feature is live translation. Incoming messages can be translated on the spot and outgoing replies can be translated before sending, making communication easier for international travelers and multilingual users.
Beyond navigation and messaging, Gemini can pull information from Google Calendar, Google Tasks, Google Keep, Samsung Calendar, Samsung Reminder and Samsung Notes. More apps are expected to join this list soon. The goal is to give drivers helpful information without making them interact manually with the screen.

Google recently began adding Gemini powered features to the Google Maps app as well. Even without Android Auto, users can ask complex questions inside Maps and receive detailed answers with follow up options. This shows Google’s larger plan to connect Gemini to all major services, both inside the car and outside of it.
The update does not stop with Android Auto. Cars that use Android Automotive OS will also get Gemini built directly into their infotainment systems. Volvo and Polestar are among the first automakers confirmed for this deeper integration.
With these upgrades now rolling out, drivers can expect a smarter and more intuitive experience. Gemini aims to reduce distractions, provide clearer information and offer real help with everyday tasks. As Google expands support across apps and car systems, Gemini is shaping up to be one of the most significant steps forward in in car AI assistance.
