In a landmark move toward modernizing Pakistan’s licensing system, the Punjab government has launched the country’s first AI-powered driving test car. Developed under the special directives of Chief Minister Maryam Nawaz Sharif, this innovative system marks a major step toward digital transformation, transparency, and efficiency in public services.

Designed and engineered by the Punjab Traffic Police, the smart vehicle aims to revolutionize the traditional driving test system by removing human involvement and enabling a fully automated assessment process. The introduction of this technology places Punjab among the early adopters globally to deploy AI for driving evaluations.

Advanced Features for Fully Automated Testing

According to DIG Traffic Waqas Nazir, the AI-equipped car relies on a network of sensors and high-resolution cameras to automatically analyse a candidate’s driving performance in real time. This eliminates subjective judgment and ensures fair results for every applicant.

Key Features of the AI Driving Test Car:

  • Facial Recognition Camera: Confirms the identity of the candidate before the test begins.
  • Biometric Fingerprint Scanner: Adds an additional layer of verification to prevent impersonation.
  • Four External Cameras: Monitor vehicle movement, turns, lane discipline, obstacle handling, and real-time behavior.
  • Internal Safety Checks: Automatically verifies seatbelt usage, handbrake position, and other safety measures.
  • Automated Instructions: Once the candidate sits inside, the system activates, providing step-by-step instructions and a countdown timer.

The car’s advanced AI system evaluates performance based on pre-set criteria, making the process transparent and free from human error or influence.

A Big Step for Transparency and Modernization

Punjab’s innovative AI-driven system aims to address common public concerns regarding driving tests, including favoritism, inconsistency, and manual errors. By shifting to a fully automated model, the government seeks to:

  • Improve transparency
  • Enhance road safety
  • Modernize provincial services
  • Reduce wait times and testing irregularities

The initiative aligns with the government’s broader vision of integrating technological solutions into public administration for faster and fairer service delivery.

A Model for the Future

With Pakistan’s first AI-powered driving test car now operational, Punjab is setting a new benchmark for digital governance. If successful, this technology may soon expand across other provinces, potentially transforming driving tests nationwide.
