The Karachi Metropolitan Corporation (KMC) has taken a major step toward reshaping urban mobility by finalizing a comprehensive Rs. 9 billion development plan to rehabilitate more than 26 key roads across the city. The initiative aims to ease long-standing congestion issues, enhance travel safety, and improve the daily commuting experience for millions of residents.

The proposal has now been forwarded to the Sindh provincial government for approval under the Special Karachi Development Grant, marking one of the largest citywide road rehabilitation efforts in recent years.

High-Level Meeting Finalizes Long-Delayed Projects

A high-level review meeting was held at the KMC Head Office, chaired by Mayor Karachi Barrister Murtaza Wahab. Senior officials including Secretary Local Government Waseem Shamshad, Commissioner Karachi Syed Hassan Naqvi, and Municipal Commissioner KMC Syed Muhammad Afzal Zaidi attended the session.

During the meeting, authorities examined long-pending urban development schemes and agreed to finalize road rehabilitation plans immediately so that work can start without delay once funds are allocated. The focus is on strategic routes that support heavy daily traffic but have deteriorated due to congestion, excessive load, and years of under-maintenance.

Over 26 Strategic Roads Selected for Rehabilitation

The upgrade plan spans major corridors across District Central, District West, District East, District South, Korangi, and Malir. The selected roads include:

  • Hashim Raza Road
  • Shahrah-e-Usman
  • Al-Amna Avenue
  • Shahrah-e-Usman to Shahrah-e-Noor Jahan
  • Gulshan-e-Ghazi and 19-D Road
  • Faqir Colony internal corridors
  • Sehba Akhtar Road
  • Sardar Usman Ali Sabri Road
  • Nash Kazmi Road
  • Garden Road, Mirza Adam Road & Sarwar Shaheed Road
  • Jinnah Square Road, Liaquat Market Road
  • Khokar Par Road and Mehran Depot arteries
  • Additional internal connectors forming the core Malir traffic grid

These routes connect dense residential and commercial zones, making their rehabilitation crucial for reducing congestion and improving overall mobility.

Additional Funds for Drainage and Street Lighting

To support the road upgrades, KMC has proposed an extra Rs. 1 billion for sewerage repair and Rs. 2 billion for street-light improvements. These enhancements aim to improve drainage capacity, strengthen nighttime visibility, and ensure that the city’s infrastructure can handle increasing traffic demands.

Mayor Wahab: A Major Step Toward a Better Karachi

Mayor Murtaza Wahab emphasized the significance of the initiative, stating:
“This development package will significantly ease travel for millions of residents, reduce congestion, and enhance safety and accessibility across all towns of the city.”

Strict Monitoring Planned for Quality Completion

Once approved, the road rehabilitation projects will be executed on a priority basis with strict monitoring mechanisms to ensure timely delivery and high-quality construction standards.

The Rs. 9 billion KMC road upgrade plan is poised to bring long-awaited improvements to Karachi’s transport network—offering residents safer, quicker, and more reliable daily travel.
