Punjab Revises Electric Taxi Scheme: Introduces First-Ever Women’s Quota for EV Taxis

In a major step toward promoting inclusive and eco-friendly transportation, the Punjab government has revised its Electric Taxi Scheme, announcing a dedicated quota of 100 electric vehicles for women drivers. This marks the first time women in the province will receive exclusive allocations for an EV-based public transport initiative. The move is being widely welcomed as a progressive step toward empowering women and increasing their participation in the transport sector.

Under the updated allocation formula, an additional 200 EV taxis will be distributed among male drivers through balloting. The revision also significantly reshapes the balance between individual and corporate beneficiaries. The corporate taxi operator quota has been reduced from 1,000 to 800 electric vehicles, while the share for individual citizens has increased from the earlier 100 units to a combined 300 units — ensuring greater public participation in the scheme.

Punjab’s Transport Minister emphasized that the revised plan strengthens the province’s transition toward eco-friendly mobility, while expanding opportunities for the public. He noted that the earlier model heavily favored corporate fleet owners, and the new formula brings fairness, wider accessibility, and more balanced distribution.

Inspired by Global EV Taxi Models

The Electric Taxi Scheme, announced last year, draws inspiration from global best practices, including China’s successful EV taxi ecosystem. Pakistan’s shift toward electric mobility is expected to bring long-term cost savings, reduced pollution, and improved urban transport efficiency.

The Punjab Transport Department has already initiated preliminary work for the scheme. Discussions are ongoing with multiple electric vehicle manufacturers, including the Deewan Group and National Radio & Telecommunication Corporation (NRTC), both of which have expressed interest in supplying vehicles for the project.

Phased Rollout Across Punjab

The EV taxi program will launch in phases, beginning with Lahore and divisional headquarters before expanding to other major cities across the province. Once operational, these electric taxis will run 24/7, offering uninterrupted, environmentally friendly transportation services to the public.

With the introduction of a women-specific quota and expanded opportunities for individuals, the revised Punjab Electric Taxi Scheme is set to accelerate the province’s transition toward sustainable transport—while empowering more citizens to participate in the future of green mobility.
