Sindh Approves Major Traffic Law Reforms to Enhance Vehicle Safety and Transport Regulation

In a landmark decision, the Sindh cabinet has approved sweeping amendments to traffic laws aimed at boosting vehicle safety, streamlining registration procedures, and eliminating unauthorized practices within the province’s transportation sector. The initiative is part of a broader effort to modernize road infrastructure and improve public safety across Sindh.

Chief Minister Sindh has directed all provincial ministers to engage in transparent consultations with assembly members before the new regulatory framework is implemented, underscoring the government’s commitment to accountability and stakeholder inclusion.

Key Traffic Law Amendments in Sindh:

• New Registration Fees: A 0.5% registration fee will now be applied to heavy vehicles, alongside a new annual tax of Rs 1,000.
• Mandatory Fitness Certificates for Commercial Vehicles: All commercial vehicles must now obtain valid fitness certificates, with penalties of Rs 10,000 for non-compliance.
• Vehicle Age Restrictions:
  • Inter-provincial movement of vehicles older than 20 years will be banned.
  • Vehicles older than 25 years will be restricted from inter-district travel.
  • Substandard rickshaws and loader vehicles will be completely banned from operation.
• Local Vehicle Assembly Regulations:
  • Local assemblers must obtain a license costing Rs 3 million annually, with Rs 1 million required for renewal.
  • Unauthorized or counterfeit vehicle assemblies will attract fines of up to Rs 1 million.

These measures are designed to bring transportation standards in Sindh in line with modern safety and environmental benchmarks. The government also aims to curb pollution, improve vehicle reliability, and reduce the number of accidents caused by poorly maintained vehicles.
