Jeff Bezos-Backed Slate Auto Launches the Slate Truck: The $20K EV That Redefines Simplicity

In a bold move that’s shaking up the electric vehicle market, Slate Auto, a startup backed by Jeff Bezos, has unveiled its first product — the Slate Truck. Designed with affordability, customization, and simplicity at its core, the Slate Truck offers a refreshing alternative to the tech-heavy, high-priced EVs dominating the industry today.

Slate Truck: A No-Frills EV for Everyday Americans

Starting at under $20,000 after federal tax credits, the Slate Truck promises an impressive 150-mile range on a full charge, with an optional upgrade pushing it to 240 miles. Built in Indiana, this compact electric pickup is made for customers who want control, customization, and value without the unnecessary bells and whistles.

Forget touchscreen interfaces, powered windows, and glossy finishes — the Slate Truck keeps it analog with manual windows, steel wheels, and zero paint. Buyers can personalize their truck with over 100 accessories, ranging from wrap kits and roof racks to a full flat-pack SUV conversion kit — all without needing a mechanic.

Specs at a glance:

  • Range: 150 miles (240 miles optional upgrade)
  • Payload Capacity: 1,400 pounds
  • Towing Capacity: 1,000 pounds
  • Frunk space: Perfect for tailgates and storage

Challenges Ahead

Despite its promising concept, Slate Auto faces several hurdles. Potential tariffs on Chinese parts, navigating safety approvals for DIY kits, and maintaining the sub-$20K price point while adhering to U.S. regulations could create headwinds. Moreover, the initial model does not offer AWD or 4WD, limiting its appeal for off-road enthusiasts — at least for now.

Slate Auto’s Vision: Reclaiming Ownership

Slate Auto CEO Chris Barman summarized the company’s mission powerfully:

“The definition of what’s affordable is broken. Slate exists to put the power back in the hands of customers who have been ignored by the auto industry.”

With over $111 million in backing from major investors like Bezos and Dodgers owner Mark Walter, Slate Auto aims to empower customers priced out by today’s luxury EV trends. By offering deep customization and avoiding the costly “tech bloat” seen in many startups, Slate could carve a unique space in the EV landscape.

In a world where EVs are increasingly complicated and expensive, the Slate Truck offers a refreshing, no-nonsense approach to vehicle ownership. Whether Slate Auto can overcome regulatory and supply chain challenges remains to be seen, but one thing is clear — the Slate Truck is a game-changer that could redefine what it means to drive electric.
