Karachi Imposes Two-Month Ban on Illegal Vehicle Modifications to Boost Public Safety

In a bold and necessary move to enhance road safety and curb criminal activities, Karachi authorities have announced a city-wide ban on illegal vehicle modifications, effective from April 8 to June 7, 2025. This initiative aims to tackle the growing concern over unauthorized changes that compromise traffic regulation and facilitate criminal behavior.

According to the Deputy Inspector General (DIG) of Traffic, modifications like fancy or fake number plates, pressure horns, and excessively tinted windows pose serious challenges to law enforcement. These alterations often make it difficult for authorities to trace vehicles involved in illegal activities, providing criminals with a cloak of anonymity on Karachi’s busy roads.

What’s Banned?

The temporary ban covers a wide range of illegal vehicle modifications, including:

  • Decorative or unauthorized number plates, especially green-colored ones
  • Pressure horns and sirens that cause noise pollution and public disturbance
  • Tinted windows exceeding legal visibility limits
  • Unauthorized rotating or flashing lights installed without proper approval

Authorities have also prohibited the sale and installation of such equipment across the city. Police personnel—particularly Station House Officers (SHOs)—have been instructed to take strict legal action against violators, including registering formal cases.

Community Involvement Encouraged

In a bid to make the crackdown more effective, the public is being urged to report violations. The administration believes that community cooperation is key to ensuring lasting change in the city’s traffic discipline and security framework.

More Than Just Traffic Reform

This ban goes beyond traditional traffic management—it’s a targeted effort to reduce crime, improve law enforcement efficiency, and create a safer environment for all road users. By removing illegal modifications that offer criminals a tactical advantage, Karachi is sending a strong message: there will be zero tolerance for traffic violations that endanger public safety.

The administration views this campaign as a stepping stone toward long-term urban safety reforms. With active enforcement and public support, Karachi is taking a crucial step toward cleaner, safer, and more law-abiding roads.

The Rawalpindi government has imposed an immediate ban on motorcycles converted into makeshift loader-rickshaws using metal or wooden structures. Proper loader-rickshaws and Qingqi rickshaws remain legal, but illegally modified bikes will be confiscated, and owners must remove the added parts under court supervision to reclaim them. The crackdown aims to improve road safety and reduce traffic hazards on busy routes.
