2027 BMW i3 Promises Long Range and Advanced Tech

BMW is preparing to electrify its most iconic sedan. The upcoming 2027 i3 will replace the combustion-powered 3 Series in the electric era while keeping the sporty, three-box sedan appeal that defines the brand. The i3 name revives BMW’s first serious electric hatchback legacy, signaling a new chapter for the brand’s EV strategy.

The new i3 will sit on BMW’s next-generation Neue Klasse platform, designed specifically for electric vehicles. Unlike the i4 and i5, which are built on modified combustion architectures, the i3 will not face design compromises. This dedicated EV platform allows a lower vehicle height, improved efficiency, and more flexible battery placement.

BMW plans to equip the i3 with its sixth-generation eDrive system. Reports suggest the new electric powertrain will deliver 30% more range, 30% faster charging, and 25% higher efficiency compared with current models. The 800V architecture and new cylindrical battery cells could enable a fully loaded i3 to achieve over 300 miles on a single charge. Charging speeds may exceed 400 kilowatts, allowing rapid stops on long journeys.

The platform can reportedly accommodate up to four motors and output anywhere from 268 to 1,341 horsepower. Entry-level models will likely feature single-motor rear-wheel drive, while higher trims could offer dual-motor all-wheel drive. BMW may release multiple trim levels, possibly labeled i320, i330, and i340, to distinguish power and features.

BMW previewed the i3 with its Vision Neue Klasse concept. The electric sedan will retain the classic sporty proportions but adopt cleaner, simpler lines. The controversial mega kidney grille is expected to shrink or disappear, following the minimalist design seen on the Vision Neue Klasse and iX3. Traditional BMW elements like the Hofmeister Kink will remain.

Inside, the i3 is expected to push technology forward. BMW has teased features such as augmented reality windshield projection, coast-to-coast digital displays, and sustainable materials throughout the cabin. The interior aims to combine futuristic innovation with driver-focused ergonomics. Coupe and wagon variants could follow, expanding the model range.

BMW is already building i3 prototypes at its Munich factory, with production expected to ramp up in the second half of 2026. Pricing is not yet confirmed, but analysts estimate the base i3 could start around $50,000, slightly above the current 3 Series but below high-end EV competitors.

The 2027 i3 will compete directly with the upcoming Mercedes-Benz C-Class EV and other electric luxury sedans. By combining long range, advanced EV technology, and iconic BMW design, the i3 could set a new benchmark in the premium electric sedan segment.

BMW’s electric 3 Series represents more than just a new powertrain—it signals the brand’s commitment to modern EV technology while retaining the driving dynamics and style that have defined the 3 Series for decades.
